YESHIVA UNIVERSITY
ROTH INSTITUTE SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Summer Undergraduate Honors Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Sue Golding Graduate Division
The program is primarily designed for undergraduate students who have a
strong interest in a research career in the biochemical or biological sciences,
and provides 8-9 weeks of experience working in an active basic biomedical
research laboratory at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The program is
open to SCW and YC students only. YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR AECOM’S
“SURP” PROGRAM WHICH IS FOR NON-YU UNDERGRADUATES. Please note that it is preferred that the student will have
completed the junior year of college. Students having completed their bachelor’s
degree are ineligible.
DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM
As a student participating in the program you will do research in a
laboratory under the direction of a faculty member. Laboratory assignments will
be made according to the mutual research interests of the faculty sponsors and
the student participants. Student preferences for specific laboratories will be
honored whenever possible. Descriptions of laboratory research projects may be
found on the web at
http://www.aecom.yu.edu/home/SGGD/summer.htm
You will have the opportunity to interact not only with the faculty member
directing your research, but also with graduate students and/or postdoctoral
fellows working in the laboratory. There will be weekly seminars with other
students enrolled in the programs, given by faculty and graduate students. At
the end of the program, each student will present his/her work to the other
students and the faculty advisors. Each student will also be expected to write a
brief report concerning the research carried out and its relation to other work
going on in his/her laboratory.
EXPENSES
Scholarships in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded. Students will be
responsible for travel, meals, and other incidental expenses.
HOUSING
Student housing at the Medical School complex will be available for those who
request it.
MEALS
Meals may be prepared in the apartments or purchased at the College or
Hospital Cafeterias.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Participants will be invited to all Graduate School functions. Smaller group
social interactions will occur within your research laboratory and with other
program participants. The Administrative Office of the Sue Golding Graduate
Division will serve as a Student Affairs Office.
Eligibility Requirements
Completion of the junior year or, in exceptional cases, the sophomore year
of college. Sophomores with limited number of science courses and graduating
seniors are not eligible.
Cumulative grade point average as required for honors work or demonstrated
unusual motivation for research.
Career interest in biomedical sciences (especially research).
Application Procedures
Submit a completed application form (pages 1, 2 & 3, typed or printed in
black ink) to the Roth Institute Scholars Committee before the final
examinations of the fall semester.
Request five copies of your transcripts to be sent to the committee (there
should be no charge for unofficial transcripts used by the committee).
Ask for letters of reference from at least two YU faculty members making
sure that the letters reach the committee by the first week of the spring
semester (see last page).
Two members of the Roth Scholars committee will interview you.
The committee will inform you of its decision no later than end of March.
If accepted, you should return a signed acceptance form within ten days.
If selected as a Roth Institute Scholar you will be contacted by AECOM
regarding your placement with a suitable group.
Conditions of Award
Awardees will work with a mentor at AECOM on a research project (basic
research) in an area of biomedical sciences.
The awardee will work full time for 8-9 weeks of the summer. Starting and
ending dates will be indicated by AECOM. The usual starting day is in mid
June.
Each awardee will receive a stipend.
Roth Institute Scholars may apply for independent study credits for their
summer research. These credits do not satisfy requirements in the major field
of study and do not fulfill the requirements for the Honors Program. Some
students use their research as the basis of additional work which is needed
for an Honors thesis. In addition to successful completion of the summer
research at AECOM, a report, written in the style of a scientific paper, is
required for receiving credit.
All correspondence or questions should be addressed to
Dr. Barry Potvin,
Department of Biology, Yeshiva College, phone (212)-960-5372; e-mail
.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED DURING THE READING
WEEK OF THE FALL SEMESTER AND THAT ALL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS ARE RECEIVED BY THE
FIRST DAY OF THE SPRING SEMESTER. THE COMMITTEE WILL NOT CONSIDER ANY INCOMPLETE
APPLICATIONS.

Professional Goals: Write a statement describing your
professional goals and how participation in this research program will aid you
in attaining them. Try to include your specific reasons for selecting certain
areas of research interest (see below). Keep in mind that this will be read by
the faculty who are asked to accept you into their laboratories for the
summer.
Extracurricular experiences: list and briefly
describe activities that you have engaged in or are presently engaged in
outside of regular class time. Your list may include: (a) Research experience
(b) Volunteer activities (i.e. school and/or community service) (c) Membership

Please list the names of all persons who agreed to write
a letter in support of your application.
Would you be interested in free on campus housing?
After what date (at the end of the spring semester)
should AECOM contact you at home rather than at your campus location?
Please indicate which research areas are of the most interest to you (you
may make multiple selections by holding down on the control key while clicking
your selections). This information is required in order to assist the Director
of the Summer Undergraduate Research Program in your placement with an
appropriate research group.
The Sue Golding Graduate Division of the Albert Einstein College of
Medicine comprises the Departments of Anatomy and Structural Biology,
Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology and Cancer, Microbiology and
Immunology, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Pharmacology, Neuroscience,
Pathology, and Physiology and Biophysics. Since research is often
interdisciplinary in nature, it is likely that you will find your interests
reflected in more than one department. In filling out this form, please note
that your application will be directed to faculty members who are the most
appropriate, based on the information that you supply in your essay and on
your research interests.
Listed below are general areas of research that reflects the interests of
the Graduate School faculty. Check off those that most closely correspond to
your own interests.
MAKE SURE THAT YOUR APPLICATION AND ALL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS ARE RECEIVED
BY THE REQUIRED DATES. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
